WHO WE ARE

Established in 1974, Deakin was the first in regional Victoria and the first to specialise in distance education. Deakin today has over 53,000 students across five campuses. Deakin has a long-standing reputation with cutting edge technology and aims to be at the forefront of digital change.

MORE ABOUT US

In the 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) report, 89% of Deakin’s research was rated at or above world standard. Deakin ranks in the top 3% of the world’s universities in each of the three major rankings (THES, ARWU and QS).

Deakin has a student focused culture with a reputation for being accessible and friendly. Deakin continues to be a sector leader for graduate satisfaction, first in Victoria for the sixth consecutive year in the Australian Graduate Survey (2010-15).

In Deakin’s sixth annual submission (2016) to the Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI), we achieved Bronze Employer Status. In the same year Deakin was a silver sponsor of the inaugural Australian Ally Conference at Western Sydney University and the Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander pledged Deakin’s support for marriage equality.

Deakin University Student Association hosts Deakin Pride Queer Society (DPQS) – a club for staff and students that organises events for LGBTQIA+ identifying and LGBTQIA+ friendly people to meet and socialise.

Roxanne-Bobby J (rbj) Thomson Student Central Officer, Division of Student Administration

I have worked at Deakin University for over 3 years and I could not imagine working anywhere else now as I have never felt so comfortable and celebrated as I do working at Deakin.

I am gender fluid and I have worked in two divisions at the University and both have fully supported my name and presentation choices.

The importance of being able to be your full identity within the workplace is often discounted, I cannot express how much it has contributed to my overall happiness within life.
