Australia’s health system is world class, supporting universal and affordable access to high quality medical, pharmaceutical and hospital services, while helping people to stay healthy through health promotion and disease prevention activities. The Department of Health has a diverse set of responsibilities, and throughout there is a common purpose, which is reflected in our vision statement: Better health and wellbeing for all Australians.

We aim to achieve our Vision through strengthening evidence-based policy advice, improving programme management, research, regulation and partnerships with other government agencies, consumers and stakeholders. Our work includes implementing a series of wide ranging structural reforms to improve access to health services and to ensure sustainability of the health and hospital system.

We are looking for people with a commitment to improve the health and wellbeing of all Australians. Roles are varied and may include policy advice, programme management and corporate support. Health is committed to providing an inclusive workplace that allows employee to bring their whole self to work and we seek employees who will embrace this environment.

Health’s Central Office is located in Canberra. There are small offices in each capital city, as well as Alice Springs and Townsville.

Faith Gibson South Australian State Office

I feel safe working at Health. It is one of only two places where I have worked where my sexuality is a non-issue. There have been no awkward or intrusive questions, or offensive jokes. There has been complete acceptance of my wife, my two children, my unconventional haircuts and my love of a good tie.

The Health Pride Network here is active and even in a regional office I feel part of the LGBTI community. But the nice thing is that I feel part of a community here in the SA office anyway, irrespective of how I identify.
