Who Are We

The University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) is a world leading research-intensive, and globally focused university. Making a difference in people’s lives is what we do.

More About Us

Three core strategies guide UNSW Sydney as an institution: academic excellence, social engagement and global impact. These strategies are interdependent, and we recognise that innovation and advancement are critical to their realisation. Bringing together people with diverse experience and ideas drives this change.

Implementing practical and effective initiatives is central to all three strategies. Tackling the underrepresentation of women in senior roles, promoting wellbeing in the workplace and offering flexible work arrangements, are just some of the ways we are making a difference already.

In 2016, UNSW Sydney appointed five Diversity Champions to advocate for equity groups across the University. Our Champions are passionate and driven individuals, empowered to bring matters to UNSW Sydney’s leadership via our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Board.

We had two landmark appointments in 2017 also: our first Pro Vice-Chancellor Indigenous and the announcement of our first Deputy Vice-Chancellor Inclusion and Diversity. Both dedicated, social justice advocates in the fields of law and criminology, they are leading the equity, diversity and inclusion agenda at UNSW Sydney.

UNSW Sydney has a proud tradition of LGBTIQ inclusion and its roots lie in our Ally@UNSW Network. Established in 2008, the Network aims to ensure the University is a safe and welcoming place for all staff and students who identify as LGBTIQ.
Ally training is run by a dedicated team of University staff throughout the year, and is open to both staff and students at no cost. Combining special events and networking opportunities for Allies and the wider University, Ally@UNSW is one of the largest staff-student communities at UNSW Sydney.

In 2016, we created a visible symbol of LGBTIQ diversity with our Rainbow Basser Steps adjoining the Quadrangle, and in the latter part of the year UNSW became a member of Pride in Diversity. In 2017, a team of staff and students marched in Sydney’s annual Mardi Gras parade for the first time.

Also in 2017, we developed and launched our Gender Affirmation Guidelines, providing practical guidance, checklists and resources to support transgender staff and their managers. Throughout the year staff and students come together to recognise and celebrate significant dates on the LGBTIQ calendar including International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia and Wear It Purple Day

Mark WillcoxProfessor, School of Optometry and Vision Science, Faculty of Science

I’ve been a member of Academic Staff at UNSW since 1993. In 2016 I became the LGBTIQ Champion at UNSW; one of five Diversity Champions appointed at the time. UNSW is undergoing some major structural changes at the moment, and as the LGBTIQ Champion I feel able to raise issues regarding our community at the highest levels. I don’t always manage to change minds – but I know that our concerns and the things we are passionate about are listened to and considered.

We have done several great things for LGBTIQ inclusion over the past year or so – including having our first Mardi Gras float, launching UNSW’s Gender Affirmation Guidelines to help transgender staff navigate their way through their journey of transition, having the steps adjacent to the campus Quadrangle painted in the rainbow flag colours, flying the flag and celebrating important days for our LGBTIQ community. We also have a vibrant, accessible and compassionate Ally Network to support LGBTIQ students and staff.

We are on a journey, and that journey will lead to a move inclusive and diverse UNSW.
